History

The idea of a golf course nestled in this bucolic Mount Prospect setting originated in 1948 when the L.J. Carlton family designed the original 9 holes on their farm.

Fast forward to 1974 and the beginning of the final development period of HLC, which puts the future of the course into the hands of Joe Clark, Sr.

Beginning in 1974

The course renamed JLC Golf Club, was leased with an option to buy. Then in 1979, the Krypton Corp. was formed by Joe Clark and David Kent (of the Plymouth State College Business Department) which created the forerunner of HLCA, namely the "Highland Links Colony and Golf Club" to complete the golf course and build 14
adjacent homes.

1985 to 1988

14 homes were built and 2/3 of the course was completed.

1989 to 1992

Due to the impact of the "real estate recession", Krypton Corp. gave way to Maranatha Construction Company under Jim Ingram who worked a trade-out agreement with Joe Clark to build the remaining 20 home sites (a total of 34) and finish the golf course to his design. During this period, Clark operated the Golf Course until the project was completed in 2000.

2000 to 2004

Beech Hill Enterprises' David Scerra, a local entrepreneur, became the leaseholder and General Manager of HLC Golf Club which was a profitable business. Joe Clark as Head Professional, Marketer and Golf Instructor initiated the use of the course for PSC intramurals and classes.

2005 to 2014

Randall F. Margeson, Chief Greenskeeper for David Scerra took over from Dave Scerra in 2005 and became the current lessee but does not plan to submit a proposal for a follow-on bid.

2015 on

The golf course was formally closed at the Association’s annual meeting.

2018
The association name was changed to "Highland colony" to reflect the fact that there is no longer a golf course on the property
