proposal for a highland colony community garden
My name is Bob Hoyer, and my wife Annie and I live at 41 Wedgewood. In front of our house are the former first golf course green and its sand trap. I've enjoyed working on making those areas into self-sustaining and hopefully low maintenance areas of perennial flowers.

This year, I decided to try to branch out. I’m exploring whether there’s any interest among Colony members in starting a community garden. The garden would be placed about mid-way along the first fairway. This is where soil from the dam was dumped last summer. The area probably needs to be leveled some and it likely also needs a back-up water source. The level of interest on the part of the residents would decide the size of the project. I’ve asked the Board about the idea and they are open to it. Now, I’m contacting everyone in the Colony to see if they are interested so that everyone is included in the planning.

Probably, what can be accomplished in late summer is site prep and soil quality assessment and improvement. Barring unforeseen problems, planting might start next spring if there is sufficient interest and we don’t run into
problems or barriers. I am willing to bear the one-time expense of initial start-up costs with the understanding that future yearly costs will be shared with the other gardeners.

There is a lot to be decided. People might want to grow different things (a cutting garden, perennials like asparagus, other crops). Plot size needs to be determined. Many conversations about many details will be necessary, but of course I need to start by gauging interest in the project. If you’re interested and you’d like to be included, please email me back at hoyerab@gmail.com
